I met with Mohammad on the 23rd at the Starbucks across from the CIES building on Tennessee Street. He asked to work on situational dialogue such as an interview or ordering food at a restaurant. Since we were at Starbucks, I asked if he was comfortable enough to order for himself if I was there with him. I felt that he would do this kind of thing all the time when he got food here, but he didn’t seem too confident. He was clearly hesitant, so I suggested we could practice beforehand. We went over some casual phrases American cashiers like to use. He tried to keep it simple, but I could tell he was trying. After he ordered, we went over some basic interview questions most employers like to ask such as asking about his hobbies and strengths and weaknesses. After, he asked me for a list of American idioms that are used a lot because sometimes I use phrases such as "you can count on it" that he does not understand.

  1. I find situational dialogue to be of utmost importance to non-native speakers.
