For the first tutoring session with Soud, I mostly wanted to find out what he would like the most help in and where is was as far as overall level in reading, writing, speaking, and grammar. He is preparing to take the IELTS and has two more weeks until the date of the exam. Soud has taken it once before and is very close to the score he needs to apply for universities in the United States. He wants to focus on the subjects for which he received the lowest scores on his last test, particularly listening. Additionally, he wants to increase his vocabulary in general in order to be better prepared for responding to the exam's essay prompts.

I observed Soud complete a practice listening section for the IELTS. I was surprised by the dialect of English spoken in the exam (British English). Because of this, I will provide listening samples in this dialect )including up until the date of the exam. Regarding vocabulary, I provided him with a list of new words to learn that are similar in difficulty to words recently assigned to him for a vocab quiz at the CIES. At our next session, I will give him a brief quiz to see if he is studying the vocabulary effectively.
