I met with my child tutee Mosimano at Nims Middle School. I was expecting to speak with his teacher and see his homework, but instead we were given a room with no materials. We spoke a bit and I tried to gather as much information as I could. His first language is Swahili, but he does not remember what country he moved to America from. He is in the 6th grade and 12 years old. His English language skills are not at the 6th grade level at all. However, we can understand each other and make progress. I started off by making different sentences to test out his reading and comprehension. And then I had him write sentences to me to asses his spelling and usage. He seems to be the worst at spelling. So we went over a few vocab words like different colors, and objects: green, red, blue, white, car, cat, dog, etc. Then I taught  him the game hangman and we played this game using the vocab words we had just went over. It seemed to ease his tension and make him excited to use the words. I hadn't planned to do hangman, I was definitely unprepared for this lesson. But, our first experience together was good, and now I have a plan for what I will prepare for our next session.
