Today I obseved a group 1 grammar class, and was surprised to find that most of the students seemed to already have a decent foundation of the english language. Before the class started, as students were still trickling in, the teacher had American music playing in the background. I thought this was a great idea because it helps acustom the students to American culture without them having to focus on it. He started the class by going around the table and asking each student to tell the class something fun they did over the 3 day weekend (there were about 12 students). Most of them were able to structure their sentences well and talk about what they did, though there were a few that seemed to stuggle a bit more. Then, the students presented a homework assignment where they had to come up with at least 5 sentences based on a magazine picture. Sometimes the students used incorrect verb forms or sentence structure, but I could almost always understant what they were trying to say. Even when students made mistakes, the teacher didn't correct them or embarass them on the spot (the students were standing up presenting in front of the class). The teacher clapped after every student and made sure to encourage them by letting them know they did a good job. He collected the students' work, said he would mark their errors and give the papers back to them to correct next class. He then passed out a worksheet on present simple versus continuous, and the students worked on this for the remainer of the class. It was interesting to me to see the different levels that each student was at, and how the teacher managed to find a balance between them in order to teach the class as a whole.
