This morning I met Dojun via a skype video call. He currently lives in Seol, South Korea, so one of the very first things we talked about was the time difference. For me, it was 8am and I had just rolled out of bed and finished my breakfast, but for him it was 10:00pm and he was winding down for the night. I started off by asking him some basics, as far as how well he understands english and how long he has been studying it. This led to him ridiculing the way that english is taught in his country, and how most of the focus is just about passing the tests. He explained to me that he is driven to better his english because he needs it for his job, working for an aviation company that requires him to communicate in english. We talked about our home-towns, which turned into a conversation about Universal and Disney, since I'm from the Orlando area. We discussed some Disney movies that are popular in his country, and the competition between American movies and Korean movies being shown in movie theaters in South Korea. I asked him to teach me some things about South Korea, since that will be my host country after completing this course, and he seemed very excited that I was interested in learning about his culture. We ended the call by planning our next meeting, and I told him I would prepare a list of questions I have about South Korea for us to discuss next time.
