I participated in the cultural integration workshop and it was such a great experience, I really enjoyed it. My group had 6 members, 4 from Kuwait, one from Japan, and one from Panama. It took a little bit of time for all of the students to get comfortable with the group and warm up to each other and myself, but once everyone was comfortable we were able to have very interesting conversations based on the activities. We talked mostly about Kuwait, since that was where the majority of the group was from, and there are many differences there compared to the U.S. Some of the things I found most interesting were that in Kuwait, the father/male is expected to do everything for the family/women. They are the workers, while the women stay home, and they are expected to give the women money and also cover any extra expenses, such as dinner or shopping trips. It seemed like this was a very strong, stern rule that they follow there, and no one is to deviate from it. Another thing we spent a lot of time talking about was that even between men, there is usually an argument about who will cover the bill at an outing. They said most of the time the men will all argue about who is going to pay for it, and eventually the first one to say "I SWEAR I will pay the bill!" is the one who gets to pay it. If a boy goes home and tells his father that one of the others paid, the father will be ashamed. Overall, we had so many interesting conversations about the different cultures each of the group members was from, and I learned so much from all of them! My group also took a picture together at the end, so I'll attach it below. (One member had already ran off before we took it, so theres only 5 in the photo).
