I met for the first time with my second conversation partner, Jun, in a small coffee shop inside the College of Medicine (which was great because I didn't even know it existed until he showed me, and since I'm a Psychology major I spend a lot of time in the psych building right next to the College of Medicine, so this might become a new hangout spot for me- thanks Jun!). When we first got there, he told me he would pay for my coffee, because that is sort of a tradition in his culture when you first meet someone. We sat inside and talked a lot about his country, South Korea, and I told him that I am planning to go there in the fall to teach english. He was so excited to hear this, and once I told him that, his whole face lightened up. He was a bit quiet at first, but once he found out I was interested in South Korea he was much more talkative. We discussed some of the transportation there, and we talked a lot about Seoul and it's big city life. He said it is much too crowded for him there, and he seems to like Tallahassee so far because it is a bit more quiet and there aren't always people everywhere. He has been living here for about 6 months, and said that he really struggled last semester because of how different things were here, and it was just hard for him to get accustomed to the change and feel comfortable. Now, however, he is starting to like it much more, and becoming more at ease with Tallahassee and FSU. He taught me how to say "hello" in Korean, and explained that there is a social heirarchy in his culture, so you say things differently when talking to your friend versus someone you meet for the first time or someone older than you. We ended the session deciding that each time we meet, he will teach me a new word or phrase in Korean. I really enjoyed talking with Jun and can't wait to meet with him agian.
