I met with Dojun on Skype for the third time. We started off by just talking about our weekend and what we had done since the last time we spoke. He told me he spent a lot of time cleaning his house and doing dishes, and I talked about the different classes I'm taking and the homework I have for them. I had a list of topics I wanted to ask him about South Korea, so we began discussing the air pollution problem in South Korea and he told me a bit about China and the wind bringing over all the smoke from the factories there. We moved on to about religion, and he said that overall the view on religion in South Korea is much like how it is here in America. I asked him if there were any strong views on race in his country, and he told me that South Korea is actually very racist. We discussed different racial groups and different views that Koreans have among these groups, and we talked about diversity. I then asked about South Koreans' views on homosexuals, and he explained to me that South Korea is a very conservaive country, and gays and lesbians aren't really approved of there. He did say, however, that more recently there have been several celebrities and highly valued people who have started to come out and announce their homosexuality, so to some extent it is becoming more tolerable, but for the most part Koreans do not approve of this behavior, and just try to ignore it. Overall I think this session with Dojun was very informative and I really learned a lot about some of the cultural values in South Korea and what kinds of opinions people have there regarding controversial topics. We won't meet again until next Monday, because he will be out of town this weekend going on a family trip to Japan. I'm excited to hear about his trip the next time we talk.
