Today I met with Marcia, my adult tutee. Based on the previous text messages we shared when planning to meet, I was prepared for her English to be rather poor, and I thought I would have to work very hard to understand her and communicate. However, when we met at Starbucks today, I was surprised to find out that she can actually communicate rather well in English! A lot of her sentence structure was a bit off, and sometimes her form was incorrect or her speech was a bit broken, but overall we were able to communicate very well and I could understand almost everything was saying. We started off with the questions from the handout, and this helped me to learn a lot about her. We were able to talk very easily, and none of the conversation ever felt forced. She seemed very outgoing and I really enjoyed speaking to her. She had a lot of personality right from the start, and it allowed us to feel very comfortable with each other, which I think will really help for future tutoring sessions with her. We talked a lot about Brazil, where she is from, and she also mentioned that she has family in South Korea, so she speaks both Portugese and Korean (and English)! She is a group one student in most subjects, which I thought was rather odd, because I felt like her English was much better than what I would expect from a group one student. She said the only subject where she is in group two is composition, which she said she thinks is weird because composition is her least favorite subject. We talked about why she is learning English, and she explained that she needs to get a certain score on the TOEFL, because she wants to join a Masters program at a university either in the U.S. or in Korea. In addition to passing the TOEFL, she also wants to learn English just so that she can communicate better, and she thinks it will help her in her future career. Overall I really enjoyed talking with Marcia. We seemed to get along really well, and we probably could have kept talking for hours if we both had the time. We made plans to meet again on Saturday, and she said she will bring some materials that she has been working on in class so that I can help her with her punctuation, because that is what she stuggles with the most. I look forward to meeting with her again and am excited to help her learn English.
