Today I met with Kevin again at Apalachee Elementary. I did not get to meet with him at all last week because there was and issue in the scheduleing with availability. I was hoping that this time Kevin would be a bit more open and warm up to me easily, since we had already met once and gotten some of the basics out of the way. However, this was not the case. Kevin still seemed very shy and timid, which I'm starting to assume is just a part of his personality and not something I should feel responsible for. I tried to work with him and smile a lot to reassure him that I am friendly and it is okay for him to talk to me, but he was still pretty hesitant. We started off by working on some vocab cards of classroom objects. One side had the spanish word and one side had the english word. We went through a set of about 30 of these and he seemed to be pronouncing them fairly well. We then played a matching game on the computer using these same vocab words, and he was almost always able to get the translations correct. This activity taught me that Kevin actually does understand a bit more english than I originally thought, because he was already familiar with many of these words. After this activity, we moved on to write sentences about things we like and things we do not like. This seemed to help warm him up a little bit, as we talked about liking sleep and chocolate cake, but disliking homework and having to study. Even though Kevin is still shy and reluctant to talk unless I prompt him to, I think overall his english skills will continue to improve, because he does seem to be understanding the words and activities we worked on. We will meet again on Wednesday, and I plan to prepare some sort of game for us to play that might help him feel more comfortable and not so timid.
