I met with Fahad in the coffee lounge of the Hecht House. He wasn't completely fluent in English, but had a very good grasp of it, I'd say low intermediate. We started with the usual niceties at first, and the handout that Claire Sipple provided was great for starter questions. I then asked the same questions I did as with my tutee, such as "why are you studying English" so I could best help him. He is studying for the IELTS, and planning to go to FIU in the future to study computer engineering. He is from Kuwait, and his government is sponsoring his education.
He recommended a Turkish cop drama that he watches often, Icerde, so we planned that I watch an episode, and talk about it next Wednesday. During our talk, I said a few words he didn't know the meaning of, such as "melt" and "prediction", ie. "Can I make a prediction about the show, Icerde?" Next session, I'd like to start a list of words in conversation he doesn't know, so he can add it to his vocabulary. I also want to the both of us to go to an FSU soccer match, since that's his favorite sport.
