I met with Nadine today over lunch for our tutoring session. I noticed her binder cover was about New Year Resolutions, so I asked her what she thought. She said she wanted to improve her English  language skills, and I was glad that she is being proactive through setting up these sessions. She left her TOEFL book at home, so instead we looked over the class material she had just finished.

Since she is in group 2A in grammar, her teacher had just gone over the 12 verb tenses, just as we had done the first day of the TEFL class. She was confused over the differences between the perfect past continuous and perfect future continuous etc. and when was the appropriate time to use them. Luckily, I had my own notes with me, and I explained just how it was written in my notebook, which provided much needed clarity. It is hard even for a native English speaker to distinguish between them, so I had empathy for her. I could tell she was getting frustrated, so I suggested speaking instead using the 12 verb tenses. She is very talkative and not shy at all, so her speaking skills probably are the best compared to her writing or reading skills. I think during lunch sessions when it is a bit busier, it is good to practice speaking, and the longer sessions we have in the library are more suited towards honing productive skills such as writing and receptive skills like reading.
