I met with Nadine after class, and we talked a bit about the weekend. She says she is still practicing compositions in class, so she wants me to correct her work. She wrote a four paragraph essay about what advice she would give to a tourist visiting her home country, Burkina Faso. She wrote about a famous waterfall, historical museums, and trying a pineapple drink made with millet flour. She made few vocab mistakes (probably because she used a dictionary). There were small word formation errors, a common one being her failure to add "s" at the end of countable nouns. She would write "many building" or "many food". That is easily fixable, so I briefly mentioned it and moved on. I underlined the thesis statement and her 3 topic sentences, and which were all well formed. Her conclusion however, needed work. We revised it together, and I told her she needed to summarize the previous paragraphs, list the main points.

I also encouraged her not to search words on Google Translate (although I don't know if that's the right advice). At least during our sessions, I would like her not to use those sites and try to use even body language or ways of explaining, so she becomes more comfortable with the English language. She asked me to assign her homework, so I gave her a prompt that one would see on the TOEFL: If you could erect one statue, who would you choose and why? I gave her my answer (the example), which would be Beyonce, because she is a feminist, a prominent singer, and a philanthropist. I look forward to reading her essay!
