I met with my other adult tutee, Khaled, who coincidentally is the roommate of my conversation partner, Fahad. He is also from Kuwait, and is an intermediate to advanced English speaker. He did not bring any homework material this time, but did ask several questions on sentence structure and grammar rules when speaking. One I remember him asking is if this clause, "People who are studying,________", was a complete sentence. I told him no, this dependent clause must be followed by an independent clause, and must explain who or what the "people" are doing. He then asked if it could be an answer to the question, "Who are they?" I then explained grammar rules don't have to be strictly followed when speaking casually, but in writing, it must be more formal. I was glad that I was able to answer simple grammar questions, but it's beneficial for the both of us if before every session, I go over any grammar rules I don't know myself so I am better prepared.
I asked him how I can best help him during these sessions, and he said his speaking skills need more work. I find that at least for now, both Nadine and Khaled would benefit from us speaking more during these sessions than going over their homework.
