Today, I observed Andrew Wilson's level 2 Grammar class. He started off the class by going over Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous tenses, having a class discussion about what they think the difference is, and then giving them example sentences. He then had the class split up into pairs and interview each other using questions in their textbook. He made sure to pair people who weren't native speakers of the same language so they were forced to speak in only English. During this activity, he walked around the classroom and took notes. Afterwards, he pointed out a "beautiful mistake" he heard while observing, and engaged the students by asking them what they thought was wrong with the sentence. Next, the class went to the computer lab and recorded themselves talking for a minute about their hobbies. They were then instructed to listen to the recording and type an exact transcription of what they said. Professor Wilson said that they will have an opportunity to correct their grammar later, but for now to just type exactly what they said. This will help their grammar in use and will give the instructor a sense of which grammar concepts students may be struggling with. Overall, I think it was a very engaging class with a student-centered approach.
