Today I observed Andrew Wilson’s Grammar class at 10:00 AM. I really liked his teaching style and the dynamic of the class; it felt very conversational and the students seemed comfortable speaking out loud. Mr. Wilson would always respond to something a student would say out loud during a lecture and add on to it which made it feel like a natural learning environment. Mr. Wilson started off the class talking about Elvis Presley, encouraging the students to use the past participle because Presley had died. They then switched the tense to talk about Lady Gaga, who was living. I thought that was a great way to teach tenses and American culture at the same time. The next activity was very hands on and fun. There was a worksheet with a series of questions asking “have you ever…” “1.arrived late to a movie, 2. Eaten raw fish? 3. Been to Asia?” and other fun questions. He then had students walk around and interview each other and ask them “have you ever…” questions. This was a great way to get the students to engage in fun and practical English conversation and learn more about each other. Throughout the lessons Mr. Wilson would point out common mistakes made by the students and go over why they were incorrect with the entire class. Every student had a “beautiful mistakes” sheet in their binders and added onto it during the class.
