Today I was going to observe Calyn Stringer’s 3B Grammar class but she was sick and Dr. Kennel filled in for her today. Dr. Kennel began the lesson talking about adverbs, and then had students write down 9 adverbs, and then separately write down 3 sentences with an action verb but no adverb. He then had one student read off a sentence “he passed his test” and then had a second student add an adverb that made sense, like “easily.” They then ended up with a more specific sentence: “he passed his test easily.” I thought this was a great way to show how adverbs add personality and detail to a sentence. Dr. Kennel ended the class talking about different types of drivers, for example, do you drive “aggressively, or calmly?” He had students suggest words to describe different types of drivers and he would write them up on the board. They went over synonyms and antonyms which I thought was very helpful in clarifying what each word meant. This activity was the most interactive part of the class and I think the students enjoyed it a lot more than the traditional lecturing kind of classroom situation. I will definitely use this as an activity for teaching about adverbs!
