Friday I attended the cultural integration workshop at 9 AM at the Claude Pepper Center. I was happy to have students in my workshop group that I had met when I observed a grammar lesson at the CIES. I really got to see their personalities more and I learned more about their culture during this workshop. Two students from Kuwait explained popular food and drinks from their country and they were both extremely lively, funny, and talkative. First we read over and discussed the story about the blind men and the elephant. I had previously seen the story when it was emailed to me by Claire Sipple for the conversation partner meetings, but I had chosen to not use it at my meetings because it seemed too much like school work. It turned out to be a great vocabulary activity, because there were many words that the students in my group didn’t know like “perspective,” “agitated,” “camly,” and more. Another activity that I thought was fun was the generalizations vs. stereotype worksheet, I definitely think American students could also benefit from that activity!
