Today I met up with Ahmed again. In class he is learning about countable and uncountable nouns which is great because that is something he consistently makes errors with while speaking. We went over certain words that were uncountable and wrote sentences using them. This activity was very helpful for him because he picked up on a lot of vocabulary words that will help him on his ILETS exam like “humor,” “tea kettle,” and “steam.” When I introduced a new word, I brought up a photo of it on Google images which really helped to provide the visual aspect of the word while we were discussing it. After we wrote these sentences using new uncountable nouns, we discussed a book he had to read for an assignment in class, Apollo 13. I had read it before our meeting to prepare and wrote down some words and phrases that I thought he might need clarification on. Before discussing the book I showed him a fun video of an astronaut in space explaining how they brush their teeth (with subtitles) to get started. To start with new vocabulary from the Apollo 13 reading, I highlighted the word “measles” in case he didn’t know what this was. I’m glad I brought it up because he was reading it as “muscles,” and it wasn’t making sense to him. As I clarified words and phrases, I could see him start to understand smaller aspects of the story better. As I explained, he filled out his new word vocabulary reading chart so he wouldn’t forget the new words.
