Trisha TS #2
My second tutoring session was today with a sixth grade student named Hope. She was a very bright girl. I felt somewhat unprepared because she showed up without a backpack at the Guidance office where I was told to wait for her. I brought several books for her to read so that I could assess her level, but I just don't know what sixth graders should know how to do. I went over the tutor/tutee questions to learn more about her. I began by introducing myself and letting her know why I am meeting with her. I asked her some questions about herself as well. She's from Africa and speaks four African languages as well as English. She has one sister and three brothers and is the oldest. I had her read three books; the first one was very easy for her and the third one was too hard for her. The second book was a little bit difficult with some of the vocabulary, but overall comprehensive for her, so I made a note of her level. She understood and spoke well, so I asked her to write something for me. I gave her the topic "Who is your role model? Why" and asked to write half a page. She did a good job overall. There were some grammatical mistakes, but she did a good job of giving examples and details. I was very impressed with her abilities. I asked the woman who connected me with Hope for some classwork and notes from her teacher for next time so I can become familiar with what sixth graders should know and what I should teach her.
