For my first Skype tutoring session with Do-jun, we began with introductions. He works for an airline company and in his free time, he likes to watch movies. He began studying English approximately 10 years ago. This was when he was in middle school, and he continued his studies into high school. Do-jun wants to focus on his speaking and listening school. Thankfully, he is relatively outgoing and isn't afraid to make mistakes when speaking. Additionally, he wants to significantly increase his vocabulary.
When discussing methods for studying vocabulary, I emphasized that Do-jun should try to actively use the words I assign him so that he will be able to naturally produce them later. I gave him a few words to assess his vocabulary level (words like abstract and accumulate, for example). After explaining the meaning of the words and using them in a sentence, Do-jun appeared to catch on pretty quickly. To study for our next session, I have assigned him 10 more words of this difficulty; I have asked him to define the words and use them in three sentences. In our next session, I will test him (with a method TBD) on the vocabulary.
