Chelsea TS #4
English Learner: Do-jun
For our second tutoring session, I planned two activities: an oral exercise and a listening exercise. The oral exercise that I had planned heavily involved the previously assigned vocabulary. Unfortunately, Do-jun didn't have time to study them much. This was actually okay because the activity worked well in written form. It also gave me the chance to observe as he decided which word would best complete a given sentence with my definitions as a guide. After observing him complete this activity, I realized the words were too difficult for him; I was relieved that he didn't struggle through the vocabulary on his own. That could have been a discouraging experience! For next session, I will assign words from an upper level list of high frequency words. These will be easier and more immediately rewarding to study.
For listening, we watched a clip from The Office while following along with the script. He was asked to fill in a missing words. He wasn't very successful with this, but he was able to tell me about what happened in the scene (and he was correct in his description). We only had time to watch the scene once. However, because he seemed to find it as funny as I did, I asked him to give the exercise another try before our next session.
