I met with my conversation partner Rashed for a second time at a different Starbucks. This time we focused on some words he did not know. We also tried to speak mostly in the past tense. Whenever Rashed learns a new word he writes it in his notepad on his phone. We went over words like disgraceful, necessity, laughter, and loneliness. He often has a lot of questions about new words. He is very eager to learn. Rashed explained to me that he really wants to focus on his studies and he is not too concerned with making friends. Rashed has only been in America for a few weeks now, so I asked him how he is adjusting. So far Rashed is really enjoying America and has already explored the city a bit! His only complaint is that American males can be a bit arrogant (not disagreeing with that). I tried to bring up camels again, but he does not want to show me anymore camel pictures. This is really quite a shame. We talked about differences in culture regarding marriage. He told me about a friend he has that is in an arranged marriage. Men in Kuwait can have up to four wives, and they have to spend equal time with each wife! Being friends with someone who was brought up with a completely different cultural mindset, is so beautiful. I find it interesting that even with all of our differences, we still have so much in common.
