I met with Mosimango a second time at Nims Middle School. Today Mosimango was acting a bit more shy than he was during our first session. I brought four different books at different reading levels to asses his i+1 level. I found a large disparity between his reading level and his comprehension level. He has a very hard time reading words aloud, which makes me think he does not understand the words. But when I ask him comprehension questions, he seems to understand exactly what is happening in the story. However, getting him to answer questions can be very difficult. Our first meeting went smoothly, but today he did not want to participate. I tried to coax him into wanting to speak, even trying to do more physical activities, but he was very inside his own shell. I wonder if this was because of his mood or because our tutoring sessions interrupt his music class. I ended the session by playing hangman from the vocabulary words we picked out of the books. I know this is the second session I have played hangman with him, but it is the only activity we do during our sessions that opens him up and makes him more comfortable. Next time I am going to try doing hangman, or another level appropriate game, at the beginning of the session. I am hoping this will make him more comfortable during the entire session.
