I met with Kevin again at Apalachee Elementary. Based on our last meeting, I was able to gather that he actually does know more English than I originally thought, so this time I tried to only speak and interact with him and English, without using any Spanish or google translate. We started off with an activity just talking about ourselves a bit, since we didn't cover all that much during the first session because of how scared and timid he was. We used a graphic organizer and just listed things about ourselves. I found out that he likes to play soccer, which was cool because I grew up playing soccer for about 12 years, so it gave me a way to relate to him. After we talked about ourselves a little bit, we played a hangman game on my laptop. There were different categories you could select that offered different word choices, such as different foods or household objects. We ended up playing this for the remainer of the time, because he seemed to really like it. He finally smiled and was laughing and talking to me, which made me feel reassured that I was doing something right. During the game, once there was only one or two letters left to fill in, I was usually able to guess what the word would be, but he wasn't able to comprehend it yet. In this situation, I would tell him what I thought the word was going to be, and ask him to guess the last few letters knowing what the word was. This helped with his spelling and alphabet pronunciation a lot. Some words were difficult for him and even if I told him the word, he would not know how to spell it so he would guess the wrong letters. I would then show him the correct spelling, and we would sound out the word together. Overall, I really enjoyed this session with Kevin and think we are definitely starting to make improvement. I'm excited to meet with him again next week and plan to prepare a different game, to encourage the same atmosphere and interaction.
