I met with Kevin at Apalachee Elementary agin this morning. We are going to start only meeting on Wednesday's from now on, because I no longer have a car and it costs me a lot to pay for a 30 minute uber, two ways, twice a week. That aside, our session this morning went pretty well! Since he had seemed to really enjoy the hangman game we played last time, I tried to find similar games to play during this session. I found a website with many spelling games, so we spent most of the session just clicking around on that site, trying several different games. Some of them focused more on grammar and sentence structure, but those were too hard for him, so we stuck to just the simple spelling games. For most of the games, there would be a word with a missing letter, and you had letters to choose from to complete the word. For other games, it was more of a crossword style where we were given a hint and just had to come up with the word and spell it on our own. Throughout the process of playing these games with him, I realized that there were some letters he had trouble pronouncing or that he would just refuse to pronounce because he didn't know how. Once I caught onto this, we switched over to just focus on practicing the alphabet. I pulled up a page with the alphabet and pronunciations, and I read off each letter to him several times, and then asked him if he could repeat it back to me. Most of the letters he already knew and was familiar with, but some of them that were hard for him were I, J, V, W, Q, X, Y, Z. We spent some time focusing on these letters, and I tried to use some minimal pairs for differentiating between the V and B sound, because he struggled with this a lot and wasn't able to identify the difference very easily. Overall our session went well, and I think next week we might try to focus more intently on a specific topic rather than just playing spelling games the whole time.
