I met with Marcia in the CIES lounge and we started off just chatting about our week as usual. We tend to spend roughly the first ten minutes and the last ten minutes just chatting with each other about our lives rather than focusing so intently on specific english skills or error corrections. This allows her to not have to think so hard, and just allow her English to naturally flow, and her speech is usually completely comprehensible during this time. Aside from our chats at the begining and end of the session, we focused primarily on some error corrections of her composition homework. She wrote a first draft of the first paragraph of a composition, and wanted me to look over it and ensure that it made sense to me. She showed me two different versions of this same paragraph, and asked which one was better. One version contained more specific details in the introduction but had much better vocabulary and grammar structure, while the other lacked some of the advance structures, but was formulated more similarly to how an introduction paragraph should look. We discussed these points, and I explained to her that one is not necesarily better than the other, they just both have some strong points as well as some weak points. After we reviewed these paragraphs, she showed me another composition where her teacher had circled some mistakes in grammar. We worked through these together, and I gave her an example sentence at the begining. Once I modeled the correct use of grammar, she was able to correct all of her mistakes on her own, and just looked ot me for reassurance. Overall, we had a great session and I think Marcia is doing a great job at being able to identify her mistakes and understand how to fix them. In addition to just her error correction, she seems to be impoving with her ability to put her complex thoughts into complete sentences that make sense in English, which I could tell she often struggled with in the past.
