I met with P.J. at professor Kim's house to help him with a book report that he was struggling with. We started the session introducing ourselves, and then I asked him to give me a brief summary of the book he read. The book was a biography of Duke Ellington, and he seemed to understand all of the concepts in the book very well. He described Duke Ellington's life growing up, his interests, his struggles, what the turning point in his life was, and how he worked through hardship to become successful. I was surprised at how much PJ was able to recall from the book, because I feel like even if I had read it, I wouldn't have remembered all of the details he was able to tell me. Once he summarized the book, we took a look at his homework and I had him show me all of the questions that he had already answered, which was the majority of the whole report. We went over each question and I had him read me his answers. For some of them he was able to automatically identify that his answers were incomplete and needed more explanation to fully answer the question, or that his answer just didn't fit the question, so he would immediately start to correct himself or elaborate on his thoughts. We would talk about each question and if I thought his answer needed to be extended, I would fish more explanation out of him by asking him what he meant or what the reasons were for certain things. Once he verbally explained his answer to me further, I had him write down what he had just told me to add onto his response. We went through each question this way, and some of his answers were perfect the way they were so we were able to skip through some questions pretty quickly. By the end of the hour, we had managed to cover all of the questions he already completed, but we did not get to the last two that he had left blank. I quickly read over these questions, and I asked him to at least tell me what he plans to write for those two, just to get him to think about how he might form an answer for when he completes them on his own. Overall I think I was really able to help PJ. He was able to accomplish a lot on his own beforehand, and all I really did was aid him in exanding his responses to be a bit more advanced. All of the work and ideas came from him, which  was really great so that I didn't have to feel like I was just feeding him answers. He was very eager to come up with his own thoughts and work things through in his own head, rather than rely on me for an explanation.
