I met with Nadine in the coffee lounge today, to practice the TOEFL speaking part (the one where they have 15 seconds to prepare then 45 seconds to speak). I reminded her of the advice we learned in the TEFL class, which is to take notes as soon as the prompts are spoken, to have more time. Also, I reminded her of the "2 reasons and 2 examples" tip, which her teacher also taught her.

The prompt was "Do you like to read novels or magazines? Support your answer with examples". I noticed the 1st time that she would not take many notes, and only listen, and when it came time to speak, she would take long pauses as a result. The 2nd time, we did the same prompt together, and we wrote down words that came to mind. She chose magazines because of the many pictures, and because of the current events. However, she struggled with the examples. I coaxed it out of her by asking, "what type of pictures do you like?" and "what current event did you learn?" That way, she can reply with "fashion" or "I learned about Tallahassee".

We went through 2 more of these prompts, and switched to something else so it wouldn't be repetitive. She brought her classwork for me to correct, which was a brainstorming session for a future essay on Valentine's Day. I discovered in Burkina Faso, they simply call this holiday St. Valentine!

She has improved her essay writing skills so much! I'm very glad.
