Today I met up with Rayan again for
tutoring. I had prepared a Valentine's Day reading passage for him to teach him
about this upcoming American holiday and work on his reading comprehension
skills. I first showed him a video on YouTube of creative Valentine’s Day card
making and gift making to give him a sense of what the holiday looks like. The
passage talked about how Valentine's Day is for love and appreciation, but it’s
also an extremely commercial holiday. I like how it took this approach because
it lead to great conversation about all the things we’re expected to buy like
expensive dinners, flowers, etc. We then did a listening activity about April
Fools day with funny examples of Burger King creating a “left handed” burger
and BBC TV saying at a certain time if you jump you’ll experience zero gravity
because of planet alignment. It was a practical joke, so we discussed words
like practical joke, hoax, etc. He then told me he was working on noun and
adjective clauses, so we analyzed sentences together to detect these clauses.
While analyzing, we stopped for vocabulary clarification, I had him write the
new words down, and at the end created a fill in the blank worksheet for him to
plug in the new words like "rejection," "proposal," and "occupied." After he did
this, we talked about different ways to use these new words and different
situations you could use them in, giving him many examples and correcting his
use in sentence.
