Today I met up with Rayan, my third adult tutee. He is from Saudi Arabia and speaks English really well! We were able to have great conversation and he was able to convey his strengths and weaknesses easily to me. He expressed that while he was in all level 3 classes for everything, he was still stuck in level 2 for reading. He said even in his first language (Arabic) he doesn’t enjoy reading much and explained to me how it gets very frustrating when he reads passages in English where he can’t figure out the vocabulary. For our next meeting I’m going to prepare short and interesting reading prompts and encourage discussion about the topic to show him how fun reading can be. I assessed some of his compositions and he is definitely able to get a coherent thought across with some minor grammatical and spelling errors. To assess his speaking, we did the “describing your country and culture” conversation partner activity. He was able to answer each question with ease and it was a lot of fun learning about his culture! Through discussion, I found out that he really likes Mr. Wilson’s style of teaching which involves a lot of lively interaction, hands-on activity, and conversation. I will definitely center each of our sessions around Mr. Wilson’s style of teaching!
