Today I met up with one of my adult tutees, Abdulhadi for a session. Abdulhadi is in 1A classes and had a difficult time engaging in simple English conversation during our first session. For this session, I prepared a picture heavy powerpoint about “likes and dislikes” for him. I started it off defining likes and dislikes with pictures of people. The “like” slide showed someone looking happy with a thumbs up. The “love” slide showed a heart eyes emoji. The “dislike” slide showed someone frowning with a thumbs down. The “hate” slide showed the angry red face hate emoji. I then put "like" and "love" in the same row to show they were similar, with a thumbs up emoji next to both. Under this I put the "dislike" and "hate" in the same row to show they were similar, with a thumbs down emoji next to them. I then flipped through slides with pictures of chocolate, video games, sports, etc and said “I love chocolate. Do you like chocolate?” He was able to respond saying yes he liked something or no he disliked something. To move away from talking about ourselves, I had pictures of someone hugging a dog and smiling and asked “does she like dogs?” and he would respond “yes she loves dogs,” and continued this lesson with several more examples. I then had him write his own like/dislike love/hate sentences. After this we read a short passage together talking about two people with opposite likes and dislikes. “Rachel hates school, but her brother Steven loves school.” I would then ask simple questions like “what does Rachel hate?” This activity was a little bit challenging for him, but after I encouraged him to go back and find evidence in the passage he was able to figure it out. We ended the session going over prepositions because he expressed he wanted to learn more grammar. I would put a pen in a different place in the room and have him use prepositions to explain to me where it was in relation to the other objects in the room. For example, “the pen is on the chair,” “the pen is in the cup” etc.
