On 7 February 2018 I observed Felicia's reading class for level 3B students. She had been absent for the past two days, so today she began a brand new lesson. The lesson was on the author Alice Walker, and her life accomplishments and involvement in civil rights. This class ended up having a long discussion about the United States Civil Rights Movement, and many of the students shared situations in their home countries that parallel this situation. For instance, we learned that in India there is an extreme separation of Muslim and Hindu citizens. There are certain residential and commercial areas for each of the faiths, and they do not even befriend each other. This discussion directly correlated with the reading that the students read in class about civil rights. Felicia has a very relaxed, down to earth teacher vibe and the students were also very responsive and engaging with her.
