On 7 February 2018 I observed Ryan's level 4A Speaking class. The lesson today was rather informal, but still a valuable experience. The lesson began with Ryan telling the students his agenda, which made me realize just how important doing that is. This way, the students knew what they would be facing in the lesson versus blindly following along.
First, a student presented a twelve minute Powerpoint presentation about abortion, which is a very controversial topic. The class then discussed with each other whether it should be legal, and why or why not. The students were very calm and respectful while expressing their thoughts on the matter. I was surprised to learn that the majority of everybody's home countries were not okay with abortion, and that most of the students carried the same opinion. After the class discussion with Alejandra's presentation, the students split into their partnered groups to research for an upcoming project. The students will be giving a presentation together on a topic that Ryan assigned to them, so for the last twenty minutes I just observed their research methods and conversations related to the project. Most of the students used their phones for research, and discussed how they should set up their upcoming Powerpoints.
