Elaine and I met last Wednesday Jan 31st in the lounge of CIES. For our first hour session she had a specific writing project she wanted help examining in preparation of her TOEFL exams. The writing assignment included addressing various topics about stereotypes in America, specifically those experienced by Mexican and Arab immigrants. This is a sensitive topic, and her essay was a tad opinionated, so I explained to her that typically in academic papers we try to keep our opinions out of the work and focus on the prompt at hand. Especially in this situation, I wanted to make sure she stuck to her prompt. There were many smaller grammatical errors, especially misuse of articles and her incorrect use of have/has/had.
