Taylor TS #4

On 2/12 I tutored Mohammed, a new level 1 student, in the lounge of Hecht. He was very very shy at first so it was difficult to assess his speaking skill level but I honestly would have guessed level 2 at least. After a short intro of getting to know each other I asked what his most difficult subject was, and he said grammar.
First, we flipped to a section in his textbook (2a vocabulary I believe?) and did a few exercises in the back. There was a word matching section with about 10 new words, and he was unfamiliar with all of the terms except for San Francisco. It was fun explaining the new words and relating them to things that he would be familiar with.

Next, I wrote sentences on a piece of paper with small grammatical errors like missing articles, incorrect verb tense, wrong or extra preposition, etc. His job was to correct the sentences after me. I used some of his new vocab words in this exercise as well and it was very successful.

For the last part, we did some listening exercises on the computer from eslgold.com low intermediate section. It involved us listening to a sample and then he was to answer questions about the sample. He liked this a lot too and wrote down the website so he could use it for additional practice.

I also had to explain to him what Valentine's Day was, because that is our next meeting time. He blushed. I wonder what kind of candy I'm bringing him today...
