I met with Simone Equelee today at Riley Elementary School. I'm not sure if that's how you spell his name. But, that's how his teacher told me his mother pronounced it, even though the American children call him Simon. Last time I had was fortunate enough to speak with his teacher and ask what I can work on with Simone. She was very helpful and gave me background information on him and what his struggles are. She told me he needs to take a test in several weeks on reading and answering comprehension questions. Today when I arrived, Simone greeted me with a few worksheets and we headed to the Media Center. The worksheets consisted of a short reading passage and about 10 comprehension questions multiple choice and short answer. I am still learning Simone's abilities and so wanted him to read aloud to me. He is a better at reading than comprehension. I noticed this quickly. I asked him to tell me what each sentence meant in his own words. He also seemed to use information he had read elsewhere and answer questions with that. For example, a comprehension question was regarding who lived on the farm. Simone answered, "people" when the story stated that a horse lived on the farm. I explained to him that the questions were only talking about in reference to the story. I noticed it is hard for me to come up with simple words to explain things to him and I will work on that for next time.
