I met with Turki after class. I expected we would do more IELT practice, so we began with a reading exercise in the book. When we started going over the first part of the exercise, I realized that Turki didn't understand a lot of the vocabulary in the reading and so I went over context clues. It was frustrating that the vocabulary was so upper level because it's specifically what he wants to study, but it seemed to be incomprehensible. I thought on my feet and changed the lesson to a vocabulary lesson by using context clues. Turki is sometimes very talkative about random things and doesn't respond much when I ask him if he understands what I am saying, so I am repetitive to an extent. I got a taste of him not understanding when to say idioms, when he said to me "I wasn't born yesterday". I was so shocked that he would say that to me when I was trying to help him. After asking what he meant and being objective, I learned someone in Saudi Arabia taught him the phrase and that he didn't realize it had such a rude connotation. I let him know that it's an aggressive phrase and he was surprised. He asked about more idioms and I tried to stay on track. I liked his curiosity, though, and we spent time talking about different idioms and followed up with more vocabulary.
