Since I thoroughly enjoyed Hunter Pelt's classroom, I decided to observe his 3A speaking classroom again on January 30th. Hunter has this enthusiasm for teaching students that I feel is rare especially when he interacts with the students one on one. This time, however, I did not have a partner for the
pre-lesson activity when he asked the students to pair up. Once again, he used his
extra board for “beautiful mistakes” and collected them as he walked around the
room and listened while the students discussed. After the pre-lesson, he asked
the students to correct and record the mistakes he collected. Then, he moved to
the activity and wrote 4 examples on the board: “chair, table, student, dog” and
asked for a definition of each. The goal was to get the students used to using
noun and adjective clauses, but I assume he used this time to determine how comfortable
the students were with each by assessing the definitions. After the last
student struggled to write a definition because he felt insecure about using
the adjective clause, he gave the students multiple examples of each. He showed
them how they are used and when to use them. This wasn’t too difficult for me,
but I haven’t studied this kind of grammar is so long, it almost felt like I was
learning something new. He ended the class like he did the previous by asking
for corrections to his “beautiful mistakes” board. I am so impressed with how well
the students participate and his management of the classroom. I feel the most important
thing I can learn from Hunter is his “beautiful mistakes” board and his enthusiasm
he brings to every class no matter what.
