and I met in the Dirac library February 26th at the Dirac Library. He
wanted to improve his vocabulary by reading, but he wanted a slightly difficult
reading. I got really excited because I had prepared a reading lesson plan with
“A Modest Proposal” so I felt this was an opportunity to try out one of my activities.
I gave him some background knowledge such as the use of sarcasm in this piece and
got to tell him about my Irish culture. So, I brought up the satire on my
computer and had him read. When he didn’t
understand a word or phrase, I tried to lead him to the definition using
context clues. It took a while, and I would periodically ask comprehension questions
or paraphrased to make sure he was grasping the material. After digesting the
entire essay, he mentioned that he understood why people thought it was kind of
funny at the time. We both agreed it didn’t make us laugh, but that was not the
purpose. I am really happy he liked it because this has inspired me to introduce
to more works of literature like poetry.
