I met with Mohammad the very next day after our first meeting (February 20th) in the CIES building before my TEFL class. Since he wanted things as fun as possible, I found scrabble in the lounge to play. However, I changed the rules so that we could only use verbs in any tense, but when he plays it, he must use it in a sentence. He struggled mightily, at first, making errors. I realized the game was a bit too difficult, so I removed the limit of squares he could have so he could scavenge through the entire box to beat me. Generally, he is not very talkative, so I assumed this was out of his comfort zone. After the rule change, he seemed a lot more confident, would ask me how to spell words, ask if he was correct, and I was excited he became more open. As we played, we made conversation about various things like family or sports, specifically soccer to get him talking more.
