Hassad and I met at the Dirac library on February 14th. Since
Hassad wanted to work on IELTS material, I prepared a collection of activities
we could do to prepare him. I had a few prompts for the writing sections with some
Valentine themes even though he wasn’t too interested in learning about some
Valentine slang and idioms. Also, I prepared tons of standard IELTS questions
from different sections of the test. When I found him, he told me he wanted to
work on the writing when we meet again, so we went over the test questions. One
problem I consistently found with Hassad is his spelling ability. If I verbally
asked him the question, he seemed to understand it more, but when he had to
read himself, he had trouble understanding words I have heard him use before.
This led me to believe he is an excellent speaker but doesn’t grammatically
understand the words or rules he is following when speaking. For example, he
understands when I use the word “prefer” but cannot understand it when it is in
a test question and cannot spell it when I asked him. So, this forced me to change
my tactics on how I wanted to tutor him.
