Hassad and I met again in the Dirac Library on February 20th. Hassad told me before the meeting that he wanted to work on
his IELTS writing. I felt this task was going to be difficult for me because I was
worried about having to explain strategies on taking on the writing portion of
standardized testing. So, I found a website that gives a collection of strategies,
methods of brainstorming, and how to write a five-paragraph essay in general.
Although this was obviously too much to cover in one session, I wanted to be
prepared for any question that he may ask. When giving him a prompt to write
about, I felt the most effective method of demonstrating all this knowledge was
through modeling. So, I modeled how the strategies showed how to brainstorm and
asked him to replicate his own method that fits his needs. I did this for each
step. I show him how I would write my own introduction, then body paragraphs,
and finally the conclusion and had him replicate with his own prompt at each
step. Again, the biggest issue was spelling. He could understand a word when
speaking, but when he writes, he avoids a large portion of his vocabulary, because,
perhaps, he was insecure about using words he may not be able to spell.
