On
February 22nd, I met with Hassad again. This time, he wasn't too
interested in doing IELTS studying. Instead, he wanted to work on issues he has
with English, so I created an activity that resembled spelling exercises for
ESL students. I collected mistakes he made during his writing tutoring session
such as: prefer, their, there, and they’re and asked him to try to create a
poem using some of these words. I knew this was going to be difficult for him
so I modeled some ways he could go about this. For example, I highlighted the
word secretary to use as my first line. I said, “the secretary cannot keep their
secret.” I showed him that the word “secret” is in “secretary” and asked who
did the secret belong to. This allowed him to see that I was using multiple
words in a phrase to get across the meaning of all of them in context. I told
him this is an excellent way to remember concepts or words because they can
become so silly you can never forget them. Simply, create a phrase that allows
you to understand the meaning of the word or words. He seemed to be involved in
the lesson, and I hope he uses this method in the future, because this is how I
study.
