For my first class observation, I was sat in on Ryan Flemming's Grammar with Group 1 class. He starts the class by reviewing the agenda on the board. Today, they were working on articles. The first thing I noticed about Ryan was how friendly and open he was to the class. This really seemed to lower the student's affective filter. This was a group 1 class, so the students were less willing to participate and more nervous. I noticed students who were struggling. Something I thought was interesting was that when Mr. Flemming was asking the class a question, for example "A erasers remove pencil marks". Instead of saying "A", how Americans pronounce it, he would pronounce it "Ahh", to really emphasize that it is A not an. I thought this was a really effective teaching technique, especially appropriate for group 1. When Mr. Flemming would ask a question, he would always ask twice, very slowly, and then repeat the student's answer slowly, so the class could understand. Another teaching technique I found interesting, was he would ask the students to pick partners and then count down slowly from 5, which encouraged students to pick quickly. The organization and flow of the class was seamless and reasonable. I really enjoyed watching Mr. Flemming and I hope to encompass many of his techniques!
