I met with Saeed at our usual spot and today we worked on writing prompts. Saeed is going to take the IELDS at the end of the week, so this week we will meet a few times in preparation. Just like with Kreem, I had to explain and stress the importance of allocating your time properly so that you do not get stuck on one part of the writing process. I emphasized the importance of using an organizer to structure your ideas. From my experience, organizers reduce stress and help with overall cohesion. It seems like a lot of my tutees look down on the idea of an organizer, as if it is for beginners. But even I still use some kind of structure when planning out my essays. Planning is essential. We chose a topic that asked the writer to provide both sides of an argument about parents being to hard on children. I learned that Saeed has children and is actually very opinionated on the subject. I worked with him on creating a bubble organizer. He had trouble turning abstract thoughts into coherent sentences, but the organizer at least forced him to stay on track. I am a bit concerned about his ability to receive a 5.5 on the IELDS.
