Kreem and I met at our usual spot. This tutoring session was a bit extended because he wanted some extra practice before the end of the session. We worked on writing prompts again, but this time he wanted to use more academic prompts. The prompts that we picked out were asking the writer to analyze a graph. These types of prompts seem to really confuse Kreem and give him a bit of anxiety. I told him these types of prompts were really easy, but in disguise. For these prompts, a lot of words you need to write are standard academic words. Phrases like "according to the two graphs ((title of graph A)) , ((title of graph B)) ((obvious important similarity/difference))". I showed him how to make an organizer for these types of prompts by grouping together similarities and differences. I explained how if you can draw a conclusion from the data this will make your essay appear thoughtful. Because Kreem is in group 1/2, he did not know a lot of academic words. Knowing academic words is crucial for this prompt, so I had him write down a vocabulary list and we practiced making up sample sentences and writing them down for reference. We then discussed in what paragraph or part of the sentence these academic words would best fit. We categorized the words as analytical words, data words, concept words, theoretical words, etc. Kreem wants to be a chemical engineer. I explained to him that in engineering the ability to analyze data and explain the findings logically will be crucial. This was our last meeting of the session, but Kreem and I will continue to meet next session.
