I met with Mosimango again today at Nims Middle School. He was in such a good mood and very eager to learn. We read the story of Laika, the astronaut dog. I would read and have him follow along, and then I would ask him to read. At different points in the story, I would stop to ask him comprehension questions. He has an excellent comprehension compared to his speaking level. He will not be able to read a word but will understand the context of a story and the moving parts of the narrative. In the book, there was a page with all different types of animals. I paused the story and pointed to different animals signaling for him to name them. He did not know the names of most of the animals, so we spelled them out and practiced flash-card style. Afterwards, we played a game of acting out the animals. During the session we were able to finish the entire story of Laika, which surprisingly turned out to be true. I was encouraged by his enthusiasm during this session.
