On February 26th, I met Achman at Township. There
was a large gap between conversations, because I had a difficult week in terms
of tests. Therefore, it was difficult for us to find time that matched both of
our schedules. Township is a gastropub, so I has food and alcohol, and I had
assumed he would want to check it out. We ordered, but he explained to me that
he does not drink for religious reasons. At that point, I felt stupid, because I
forgot cultural divides and completely forgot to be sensitive to these things.
I asked if he wanted to leave, but he said that this did not bother him at all.
So, we simply discussed his religion, why he chooses to follow Islam versus
other religions, and what I believe. This was a personal conversation, and it
appeared he really enjoyed explaining everything about why he chooses Islam. It
was very interesting to hear a first person perspective on what American thinks
of his religion. He talked about the common rhetoric people use when arguing
against Islam and why they are wrong. He asked me what I thought about Islam,
but I didn’t have much to say compared to him. I have a very simple belief that
people should have the ability to believe what they want, but I accept none of
their beliefs. I explained to him that I am not much of a fan of religion, but
they have important morals that were essential in creating the world that we
see.
