Tuesday 3:00-4:00 PM CIES. Today I tutored Abdulhadi and we reviewed the verb “to have.” We reviewed when to use have, has, and had and how “to have” it changes when we negate it. I prepared a powerpoint presentation with different photos and fill in the blank style sentences like “she ____ a flower” or “she ____ _____ a flower” depending on whether or not she had a flower in the photo. Abdulhadi had definitely already studied this in class because he did it with ease! After we reviewed sentences I had him write his own positive and negative sentences using “have” and “doesn’t/ don’t have.” He used the correct one in every sentence except one, and once I read it out loud he immediately caught the mistake! I was impressed with how he heard how it was wrong immediately. Abdulhadi expressed that he really wanted to start studying for essay writing for the IELTS exam. I feel like it’s extremely early in his English learning journey to begin studying, but I prepared slides about typical essay styles with the introduction, main body paragraphs, and conclusion. I pulled up an elementary school essay (4th grade) and color coordinated the main points so he could see them brought up in the intro and then distributed throughout the body paragraphs. I asked him to write me a sample introduction paragraph based on the topic “tell me about your home country,” but he told me he didn’t want to start writing essays until after the break. I found this slightly strange, but I decided to move on and play these vocabulary quizzes with him that I found online because he definitely needs to build on his vocabulary before taking the IELTS exam. Here’s the link to vocab quizzes if anyone wants them!: http://a4esl.org/a/v.html
